First-Year Family Resources

pilipiliÎÛÂþ resources to support our first-year students and their families.

Transitions and Growth

  • Talk about your orientation experience, beginning on your car ride home!
  • Prepare for separation to begin -it’s normal!  Allow your student the space to begin doing for themself, if you haven’t already begun to do so.
  • Reflect on your transitioning roles
    • Students:  Evolving, independent adult learners
    • Families:  Consultants

Family Conversations

  • Everyone’s expectations
  • Your family’s values & your student’s ability to make good decisions
  • Time management
  • Your student’s independent learning responsibilities
  • Communication & wellness plans for the fall
  • How to self-advocate & the need to be resilient (student & family!)

Be Sure To Remember

  • Students will need professional/business causal clothing for presentations & networking events.
  • Health insurance card(physical copy & picture in cell photo album)
  • Documents needed for campus employment:  photo ID/copy of SS card/birth certificate
  • Medication-Will prescriptions be transferred here?  Where will they be stored?  Do they need to make arrangements (on-campus or off-campus) for follow up?

To Consider

  • Buying or Renting Textbooks -what is your student’s best option?
  • Resident Students:  How will your student get home for weekends or in case of an emergency?
  • Commuter Students:  Is their vehicle maintenance up to date?  Have they applied for a commuter parking permit?

Emergency Contacts

  • Submit Emergency Contacts (found on Slate). Student should have completed this during their registration session at Orientation.
