Department of Modern Languages, Philosophy and Classics

Preparing students for a variety of fulfilling careers through critical thinking and effective communication

The Department of Modern Languages, Philosophy and Classics provides students with an education that focuses on developing skills in analytical thinking, effective reading and writing, and communications across cultures. Modern Languages and Philosophy Majors gain hands-on experience through internships and research projects and will be prepared for any career— whether it’s business, education, law, health care, or science.

pilipili offers degrees in three modern languages: Chinese, Italian, and Spanish. Minors are offered in American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese, and Spanish. Our students have interned with organizations including the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experiences (IAESTE) and the architectural firm, CDS International. Modern Language graduates have gone on to have rewarding careers at organizations such as the US Trade Commission, Bayer, Inc., the Fulbright Commission, the US Consulate, and Banco de Portugal.

Philosophy students concentrate in-depth on ancient and modern philosophy, while being closely acquainted with history’s most influential philosophers. Students are encouraged to pursue their own philosophic inquests and inquiries throughout their studies. This is displayed in our students’ research projects that have included “Justice and Universal Human Rights,” and “Is the Concept of Free Will Coherent, and if Not What Does That Mean?” Philosophy graduates have gone on to have successful careers with the Google, the City of Providence, Anheuser/Busch, Eastern Mountain Sports, and the Bar Association of San Francisco.
